Queen Sunwon, also known as Queen Dowager Inwon, was a queen consort of the Joseon Dynasty in Korea. She was the wife of King Hyojong, who ruled from 1649 to 1659.
Queen Sunwon was known for her intelligence and her skills in literature and calligraphy. She was also a devout Buddhist and was known for her charitable works, including helping the poor and providing education to women.
After King Hyojong's death, Queen Sunwon became the queen dowager, and she played an important role in politics and diplomacy. She was highly respected by the royal court and was often consulted on important matters.
Queen Sunwon had a considerable influence on her son, King Sukjong, who ruled from 1674 to 1720. She is credited with introducing the tradition of royal portraits in Korea, which helped to establish the image of the king as a symbol of authority and power.
Queen Sunwon passed away in 1701, and she was buried in the royal tomb of King Hyojong in the city of Guri. Her legacy as a queen dowager and a cultural patron has endured in Korean history.
